Candidate forum Saturday at VFW
The Tonganoxie VFW will be hosting a candidate forum in advance of this year’s general election on Saturday.
The event is set to start at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Post Home, 910 E. First St.
Featured races will be the Leavenworth County Commission Third District, Kansas House 38th and 42nd districts, State Senate Ninth District and Kansas State Board of Education Fourth District.
Tonganoxie is in the Leavenworth County Commission’s Fifth District, but Districts 2 and 3 will have primaries and general elections.
Republican Vanessa Reid faces United Kansas candidate Joe Wilson in District 2.
Republican Willie Dove, a former state representative, faces United Kansas candidate Sherri Grogan in the general election.
Former state representative Connie O’Brien, another Republican, is running for State Board of Education, Position 4 against Democrat Kris Meyer.
In the Kansas Senate 9 race, Repblican incumbent Beverly Gossage will face Democrat Norman Mallicoat in the general election.
Dove, O’Brien and Gossage all won primaries to advance to the general election.
Lance Neelly, the current state representative in the 42nd District, also won his Republican primary after narrowly defeating challenger and current Leavenworth County Commissioner Mike Stieben. Stieben represents the Fifth District in Leavenworth County. Neelly faces Democratic challenger Eddie Martinez in the general election.
Oct. 15 will be the last day to register to vote in advance of the general election on Nov. 5. Advance ballots will be mailed starting on Oct. 16. There will be a noon deadline Nov. 4 for advance voting in person at the Leavenworth County Courthouse.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. on Election Day on Nov. 5 with advance voting at the Leavenworth County Courthouse ending at noon Nov. 4.
