Another winter storm hits area

By Kim Callahan and Chris Conde - | Feb 19, 2025

A third major winter storm has descended on the area, bringing snow and extreme cold and leading to the closure of schools, courts, state offices and other entities Tuesday.

The Tonganoxie area had a range of snow accumulations Tuesday morning. McLouth had 3.5 inches and Lawrence just over an inch of snow as of Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Topeka, which expected blowing snow and single-digit temperatures with below-zero wind chills to last all day.

Snow was expected to continue into the afternoon Tuesday with 3.5 additional inches predicted between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. Updated totals weren’t available due to The Mirror’s print deadline being Tuesday afternoon.

The most severe storm of the season hit in the first week of January, bringing around a foot of snow on top of ice. Meteorologists called the storm “historic” for the area. Another snowstorm hit just a week ago, bringing up to 3 inches of snow.

Between December and Tuesday morning, 24.9 inches of snow had been recorded at Clinton Lake, said meteorologist Kyle Poage with the National Weather Service in Topeka.

Tuesday and today marked the fifth and sixth snow days of the 2024-25 school year for Tonganoxie USD 464.

Assistant Superintendent Tonya Phillips said the district has one more snow day built in.

If there are anymore needed after that, district officials will have to decided how to make up that time before the end of the school year, whether it’s by extending school days by a certain number of minutes or adding a school day(s) in the calendar.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are also expected to be extremely cold. Poage said, “Wind chills are the main thing we’re going to be concerned about after the snow stops (Tuesday) evening.” Those wind chills are expected to dip into minus double-digits.

Various events this week have been rescheduled, such as Thursday’s Tonganoxie Community Historical Society soup feed and the Tonganoxie FFA open house. A Tonganoxie High girls basketball game scheduled for Thursday was played Monday, while THS basketball senior night games originally scheduled for Tuesday have been moved to this coming Monday.

Though more extremely cold days are expected this week, warmth is in sight. Poage said weekend temperatures were expected to climb to around 50 degrees.
