Nola Mae Cooper

Basehor — Services for Nola Mae Cooper, 80, Basehor, were Friday, Aug. 21, at Edwardsville Christian Church. Graveside services were Saturday, Aug. 22, at Stockton Cemetery in Stockton.
Mrs. Cooper died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, at Kansas University Hospital while surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Aug. 16, 1929, in Stockton, the youngest of four children to Glenn and Ella (Macy) James. She was raised in Stockton and graduated from Stockton High School in 1947. She went on to Fort Hays State University to obtain her teaching degree. Nola then went to the University of Wyoming, where she received her master’s degree in physical education. She then taught high school for nine years in Lacrosse, Kan. The following two years, she spent teaching and coaching at Kansas State University. She continued as an instructor at the YWCA in Cleveland, Ohio, another two years.
Mrs. Cooper was an active mom with the Basehor PTA and the Basehor Rustlers 4-H Club as a leader of different arts and crafts. She also enjoyed singing with the Kaw Valley Community Chorus. She has been active in the Basehor community for many years. Among her passions were all the Basehor athletic programs, Basehor Booster Club, Basehor Historical Society, Basehor Gold Pride, Dairy Days, Basehor VFW and a volunteer with Youth Friends.
Mrs. Cooper’s artistic creativity can be seen in the emblem for the City of Basehor, which she designed. She was a past member of the Sunset Hills Christian Church in Kansas City, Kan., and at the time of her death was an active member of Edwardsville Christian Church, where she enjoyed serving as a deaconess, teaching Sunday school and singing with their choir.
She married Jeral Cooper on Sep. 1, 1963, at Stockton Christian Church, and they lived their entire married life in this area. He survives of the home.
Other survivors include a daughter, Rinda Glee Cooper, Basehor; a son, J.N. (Amy) Cooper and Jerad Glee (Christi) Cooper, both of Basehor, and Jul James (Sarai) Cooper, Lansing, Kan.; and nine grandchildren.
