Services for John W. (Jack) Gay, 82, of Shawnee, were Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Amos Family Chapel, Shawnee. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Shawnee.
Mr. Gay died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, of complications from spinal surgery.
He was born Sept. 27, 1927, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, N.Y. He was inducted into the Army at age 18 during World War II. He was discharged after 11 months and then drafted back in to serve during the Korean War.
Mr. Gay was in electronics sales and marketing, putting himself through school while working full time. He graduated from New York University with a bachelor of science degree while raising two children and a family. Jack was active as Scout Master, Little League baseball chairman, community organizer and a member of the Wantagh School Board for five years, including serving as president of the Board of Education, an elected position.
After retiring he became active in several organizations, including the Korean War Veterans Association. He helped organize, raise funds and produce the Korean War Veterans Memorial at 119th and Lowell. Next, he joined Shawnee Kiwanis and held several positions including president.
Mr. Gay could always find time to donate to good causes, including Meals on Wheels and ringing a bell for the Salvation Army at holiday time. He also ran the Shawnee Monday Bridge Club.
Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Edna; and two sons, Ken and Greg.
