Phyllis Matchette

Prairie Village — Memorial services for Phyllis Lee Collier Matchette, 88, Prairie Village, will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, at The Village Presbyterian Church, Prairie Village. A reception of family and friends will follow the gathering at the church.
Mrs. Matchette died Friday, April 9, 2010, at her home.
She was born Dec. 24, 1921, in Dodge City.
Mrs. Mathette graduated from Dodge City Junior College in 1941. She graduated from Kansas University in 1943 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism. She was a member of Theta Sigma Phi, honorary journalism sorority.
She served as director of education at Southminster Presbyterian Church. In 1965 she was made director of communication for The Village Church and served in that capacity for 22 years.
Mrs. Matchette served as elder at the church, 1964-1966, and again 1980-1990. She was a member of Women in Communications, Kansas City Young Matrons, P.E.O. Chapter CA, Phi Chapter of Alpha Chi Omega and Order of the Eastern Star of Kansas.
She is the author of “The Village Church Story”, which was published in 1996. She recently received the Woman of Faith Award.
She and her husband had been members of the church since 1949.
A son, James Michael Matchette, died earlier.
Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Robert C. Matchette; a daughter, Marta Susan Hedgecorth; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
