David Laury

Services for David G. Laury, M.D., Ottawa, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, at First Baptist Church, Ottawa. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery.
Dr. Laury died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010.
He was born Sept. 22, 1917, the son of William G. and Phoebe Ellis Laury, who were longtime residents of Franklin County.
He attended school in Ottawa and graduated from Ottawa University in 1940. He then attended Northwestern University in Chicago and received his medical degree in 1943.
Dr. Laury proudly served with the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was attached to the 2nd Marine Division in the Pacific Theater. He remained in the Reserves and was called up to serve for two years during the Korean War. He retired at the rank of commander.
Dr. Laury practiced general medicine in Garnett and Baldwin before settling in Ottawa, where he practiced for more than 40 years. Specializing in coronary care and obstetrics, he delivered an undetermined number of babies, including both of his grandchildren. He was a member of several State Medical Society committees and served as the Franklin County health officer as well as county coroner.
He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Ottawa and a past president of many organizations including: Kaw Valley Heart Association, Ottawa Country Club, Ottawa Lions Club, Ottawa University Alumni Association and the Pan American Medical Society. He was also instrumental in acquiring accreditation for Ransom Memorial Hospital and the building of the Franklin County Mental Health Center.
While he was in school, he married his college sweetheart, Meldon Henshaw. They shared nearly 67 years together before her death. Their youngest daughter, Pamela, also preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, Thomas (Shannon) David, Albuquerque, N.M.; a daughter, Annie, Denver; a son-in-law, John Elliot, Ottawa; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home.
