Marvin Zimmerman

Services for Marvin R. (Bud) Zimmerman, 86, of Basehor, will be at noon Monday, Jan. 11, at Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th St., Kansas City, Kan. Burial with military honors will be private.
Mr. Zimmerman died Jan. 3, 2010, after suffering a stroke.
He was born March 26, 1923, the son of Ira and Blanch Zimmerman. He had a lifelong fascination with flying, which began with Charles Lindbergh’s flight across the Atlantic. Mr. Zimmerman joined the Naval Air Corps in 1942 and became a fighter pilot after graduating from Wyandotte High School. He served in the Pacific theater and was stationed on Guam during World War II, where he served as test pilot for the area. His naval career included landing on four aircraft carriers and flying 40 different types of aircraft. He retired as a lieutenant commander.
He graduated from Kansas University’s School of Business in 1950 and was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi. He joined TWA in 1953 as a co-pilot, and retired 30 years later as an international captain, flying the L-1011 aircraft.
Bud’s retirement years were spent on his farm in Basehor, where he raised Angus cattle. He retired from farming in 1991.
He was a member of the Tailhook Association, Quiet Birdmen, Combat Pilots Group, Quayle Memorial Methodist Church and its successor, and attended the First Baptist Church while living in Basehor.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Virginia; a son, Robert Zimmerman, Parsons; a daughter, Susan (Patrick) Heider, St. Louis, Mo.; two grandchildren; a sister, Muriel Parhomek, Topeka; a brother, Donald Zimmerman, Madison, Miss.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. to noon Monday prior to the service.
The family suggests memorials to Parsons State Hospital Endowment Association, 2601 Gabriel, Parsons, KS 67357.
