Colvert, Stean lead way for Tonganoxie girls wrestling at BLHS’ Ladycat Classic
The Tonganoxie High girls wrestling team finished in the upper half at the always tough Ladycat Classic on Saturday at Basehor-Linwood.
THS placed 13th out of 32 teams at the tournament, which was the fifth annual installment of the invitational that draws teams from as far away as Liberal and Dodge City.
Tonganoxie scored 108.5 points at the meet.
Dodge City won the event with a whopping 371 points. Washburn Rural placed second (294.5) and Shawnee Heights third (201.5).
Baldwin was the highest-finishing Frontier League team. The Bulldogs placed fourth with 201.5 points.

Holly Colvert and Grace Stean led the Chieftains at Basehor-Linwood.
Colvert (12-1) lost her first match of the season, but still won silver. Olathe West’s Makayla Rivera stayed undefeated (11-0) and slipped past Colvert, 3-2. The THS senior put together a gusty championship match. She was battling illness earlier in the week and still was feeling the effects of it Saturday.
Stean, meanwhile, improved to 12-3 after taking third in the 170 championship bracket. She defeated Fort Scott’s Brylie Schaub (5-2) by fall in the third period (4:41) for bronze.
Autumn Wilson (7-5) placed ninth at 105 as did Abagail Starcher (6-8) in the 110 championship bracket.
Grae Vanderweide (8-6) finished 15th in the 120 championship bracket, while Stella Bradley was able to finish eighth in the 125 championship bracket. Bradley, who is now 12-5 on the year, lost to Shawnee Mission West junior Alaina Johnston (7-3) by fall in the first period (1:07).
In the 135B bracket, Tonganoxie’s Finley Keller (5-6) defeated Chanute’s Marele Miller (4-7) by fall (3:38).
In the 140 championship bracket, Tonganoxie’s Mackenzie Colgrove (11-5) placed 12th. She lost by fall (1:11) in the 11th-place match to Olathe North’s Rocky Kingsby (10-8).
Sydney Shephard placed 13th in the 145 championship bracket. Shephard (11-4) defeated Cianna Graves (2-3) with a pin in the first period (1:35).
Tonganoxie is off for winter break, but will return to action Jan. 5 with a mixer at Bonner Springs and a tournament Jan. 7 at Blue Valley Southwest.
In the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association rankings, Colvert is ranked No. 3 in Class 4-1 at 190, while Grace Stean is ranked No. 5 at 170.
Colvert Is ranked No. 7 overall at 190, while Stean is ranked No. 9 at 170 overall. There are two divisions in girls wrestling: 6-5A and 4-1A.
McLouth also has two wrestlers ranked in 4-1A: Savannah Dlugopolski is No. 4 at 100 and Anna Patz is No. 2 at 130.
Pratt is ranked No. 1 in 4-1A. Frontier League member Baldwin is No. 3, while Northeast Kansas League member Oskaloosa is No. 5.
