Tonganoxie High’s Kylie Vandervoort squares up to bunt Thursday during a doubleheader against Spring Hill. The Broncos won Game 1 at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds, 13-5, but THS responded and won Game 2, 10-7.

Tonganoxie High softball had a rough start to the season Thursday at home against Spring Hill.

THS fell behind, 8-0, before cutting it to 8-5, with some run production in the middle innings. Spring Hill would then score five more runs (two in the sixth and three in the seventh) on its way to a 13-5 victory. The Broncos looked to have momentum heading into Game 2.

And though Spring Hill only outhit Tonganoxie, 12-10, the Chieftains also committed seven errors.

Spring Hill picked up where it left off in the second game and jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

But Tonganoxie would respond.

Multiple times.

With Abby Clarkson on third after leading off with a double and Emerson Maslak on base after a single in the second inning, pitcher Farrah Halsa connected for a big three-run homer. That put THS ahead, 3-2, and they wouldn’t look back after that. THS scored two more in the third and five in the seventh on its way to a 10-7 victory.

The win moved THS to 1-1 on the season.

The Chieftains also had just two errors in the second game and outhit the Broncos, 13-10.

Santi Garcia, Mariah Herrera and Maslak all had doubles along with Clarkson in the second game.

THS now has Frontier League games Thursday at Eudora and Tuesday at Paola.
