Late-inning heroics help Tonganoxie High softball drop unbeaten Eudora
Rally time is the best time for Tonganoxie High softball.
THS fell behind early against Eudora on Thursday at Eudora, but the Chieftains erased the early deficit in the later innings and went on to a 4-2 victory against the Cardinals.
With the victory, THS handed Eudora its first loss of the season, as EHS fell to 6-1.
Tonganoxie improved to 2-1 and for the second straight game, erased a 2-0 early lead. THS did the same against Spring Hill last week and then eventually held on for a 10-7 victory.
THS gave up runs in the first and third innings, but got things going in the fifth inning.
Emerson Maslak reached base on a pop fly single. Savannah Booker then tripled on a line drive to right, which helped score Tonganoxie’s first run.
Jordyn Vorbeck then singled to right, scoring Woods and tying up the game at 2-2.
THS then pulled ahead with 2 more runs in the sixth — all with 2 outs.
Maslak reached base again on a throwing error before Farrah Halsa singled. With runners on first and second, Booker singled on a grounder to right. Maslak scored and Booker advanced to third. Vorbeck then singled to right and Halsa scored.
Eudora then went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the sixth. The Cardinals had the tying run at the plate after getting a single in the bottom of the seventh, but the Chieftains shut them down with the final two outs.
In addition to the timely hitting helping THS to a big victory was the Chieftain defense. THS had no errors compared to Eudora’s 2.
And, Sage Isaacs threw a complete game. She threw 82 pitches, allowing 6 hits on 2 runs. She struck out five and walked three in the victory.
Vorbeck and Booker both had 2 RBI. Vorbeck led the team with 3 hits.
Tonganoxie has a doubleheader Tuesday at Paola and then is on the road April 13 at Louisburg for a single game.
THS is back home April 18 for a doubleheader against Bonner Springs.
