This heat stress meter helps Tonganoxie High School athletic trainer Mark Padfield determine when heat conditions are too extreme for outdoor events and practice.

The current heat wave has caused at least one cancellation and a postponement for Tonganoxie High athletics.

Friday’s high school football jamboree at Piper has been canceled, while the THS boys soccer opener against Kansas City Christian will take place in October.

The jamboree, a preseason scrimmage with Piper, Lansing and Paola at Piper, would have been Tonganoxie’s preseason practice against other competition, but it’s been canceled due to the anticipated extreme heat.

In an effort to avoid Friday’s weather, the THS soccer game originally scheduled to be played at Johnson County Community College now will be played Oct. 7. Site and time of the rescheduled match are still to be determined.

Tonganoxie volleyball still has a jamboree scrimmage at 5 p.m. Friday in Holton, while THS cross country still is scheduled for its Red/White Scrimmage on Saturday morning at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.
