Tonganoxie girls basketball downs No. 8 Louisburg, wins 1st opener since 2012
Tonganoxie High girls basketball team has opened the season with a historic victory.
The Chieftains knocked off Louisburg, 48-28, on the road. It marked Tonganoxie’s first victory against LHS as members of the Frontier League. It also was Tonganoxie’s first season-opening victory since 2012-13. It was 11 years ago that the Chieftains moved to 1-0 with a 60-31 victory against Lansing.
Louisburg, which was ranked No. 8 in Class 4A in the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association rankings, was 6-0 in season openers against Tonganoxie before Friday. The teams started playing each other in the opener in 2018-19, but the Chieftains ended that streak against the Wildcats in resounding fashion Friday at LHS.
Alyssa Schoeneck had game-high 18 points, while Emerson Maslak also was in double figures with 10.
THS improved to 1-0 in Frontier League play and 1-0 overall, while LHS fell to 0-1 and 0-1.
The Chieftains will have their home opener Tuesday against Atchison. The Phoenix is 0-1 on the season after falling, 71-20, to Rossville on Friday at RHS. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 7 in 3A in the KBCA preseason rankings.
