Atchison sweeps Tonganoxie basketball teams at Chieftain Arena
It was a rough night for the home teams Tuesday in the first games of the 2023-24 season at Chieftain Arena.
Atchison handed the Tonganoxie High girls basketball team a 41-32 defeat. The loss was the first of the year and dropped THS to 1-1 on the season.
THS next will play Friday with a road game at Wamego. WHS, No. 3 in Class 4A in the preseason Kansas Basketball Coaches Association polls, is 2-0 on the season. The team beat Topeka High, 44-40, on Thursday and Sabetha, 50-15, on Tuesday. Friday will be Wamego’s first home game of the season.
In the second game a high-octane Phoenix offense proved to be too much for the Chieftain boys.
Atchison, ranked No. 3 in Class 4A in the preseason KBCA polls, jumped out to a 30-16 lead after a quarter and never really looked back. The Phoenix took a 45-24 lead into the half and the Chieftains just couldn’t recover. THS mustered just two points in the third quarter, as Atchison outscored Tonganoxie 20-2. AHS eventually won, 78-33.
The THS boys dropped to 0-2 on the season. They’ll try to regroup Friday with a road game at Wamego.
WHS also is 0-2 after falling Tuesday to Sabetha on the road, 51-45. The Raiders opened the season Thursday with a road loss to Topeka High, 58-38.
