Tonganoxie High’s Brusven, McWilliams take top football honors in Class 4A
Tonganoxie High football advanced the furthest it ever has in the Class 4A playoffs this year. THS went 9-3 in part with the help of two seniors who recently received statewide accolades.
Sports in Kansas announced a few days ago that THS running back Colton Brusven and kicker Jackson McWilliams were this year’s Class 4A offensive player of the year and special teams player of the year, respectively.
Here’s a closer look at each player’s resume:
Jackson McWilliams
McWilliams had a big-time career for the Chieftains.
During his senior year, as Sports in Kansas noted in its selection of McWilliams, he made 10 field goals for the Chieftains in helping them to a state semifinal appearance.
At 5-11, 190 pounds, he made 10-of-12 field goals with a long of 41 this season and was nearly perfect on point-after attempts. He went 55-for-56.
He also could boot kickoffs, as he had 43 touchbacks.
Overall, McWilliams connected on 20-of-24 field goals. His overall best field goal by distance was from 43 yards out.
In total, his leg was pretty automatic throughout his career, especially on PATs. He went a career 151-for-155. He also was honorable mention three years in a row from Sports in Kansas before winning the top honor this year.
McWilliams also was a four-time first team all-league Frontier League selection, one of the only players in league history to repeat as a four-year first-team selection in football. He has several offers from the Division II, III, NAIA and NJCAA levels, and could see even more in the next month. In addition to football, he is also a first team all-state and first team all league soccer player. He is the KSHSAA state record holder for career saves (690) and state record holder for single season saves (271).
In the process, he’s put up lofty stats while being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in the spring of 2022.
Colton Brusven
Brusven was most definitely a standout for THS and the state.
He rushed for 2,047 yards along with 29 touchdowns (2,424 all-purpose yards). He has 4,100 career rushing yards which is a school record for career rushing yards at THS.
The senior also is a two-time all-state wrestler and a two-time state golf placer, so he’s likely not done in putting up more impressive numbers in other sports before he graduates in May.
Brusven also served as long snapper for McWilliams who made 10 field goals this season. As Sports in Kansas reported, his mother, the former Amelia Holmes, was a collegiate athlete in track and basketball at KU, making the Olympic Trials in track and field.
