Chieftain girls wrestling nabs 11th out of 34 teams Saturday in Topeka
The Tonganoxie High girls wrestling team held its own Saturday at the Washburn Women’s Invitational at Washburn Rural in Topeka. The girls placed 11th out of 34 teams.
Powerhouse Washburn Rural won its home meet with a whopping 443 points.
Columbus finished second with 255.5 and Spring Hill third with 233.5.
Tonganoxie scored 186 and just missed finishing in the Top 10.
Fort Scott placed 10th with 187.
The invitational drew teams of varying sizes, from 6A and 5A schools such as Manhattan and Gardner-Edgerton to 3A and 2A schools such as Silver Lake, Oskaloosa and Minneapolis.
Senior standout Holly Colvert won gold once again. Now 25-1 on the season, she defeated Seaman’s Abagail Soppe (7-9) by fall 19 seconds into the match.
Autumn Wilson (19-9) placed second at 105 for the Chieftains after taking on Oskaloosa’s Holly Thacher (17-2) in the championship. Wilson lost, 8-1, in the finals.
Others competing were: Grae Vanderweide (13-16), who placed 16th at 120, Stella Bradley (23-12), whole placed ninth at 125, Mackenzie Colgrove (20-13), who placed 11th at 140 and Sydney Shepherd (20-14), who placed 11th at 145.
Grae Steanx took on opponents from larger schools and finished fifth at 170. She’s now 24-9 on the year.
Kelly Duncan (4-12) placed 16th at 190.
And at 2235, Anna Tochtrop (9-15) placed 11th.
Next up for the girls squad is the Frontier League meet. It will be today, with first match to start at 4:30 p.m. After that it will be regionals and then state the next two weekends for the Chieftains.
