Tonganoxie basketball games starting earlier Friday night

Tonganoxie High basketball games will start a little earlier Friday.

The THS girls varsity game against Metro Academy will start at 5:30 p.m., with the boys game to start around 7 p.m. at Chieftain Arena. The boys junior varsity game will start at 5:30 p.m. and then the girls JV game around 7 p.m. next door in the auxiliary gymnasium. There will be no C-team games Friday.

Tonganoxie teams will be looking to pick up some victories down the final stretch of the season.

The THS boys were 2-13 heading into this week’s action. Tonganoxie played at Louisburg (7-8) after The Mirror’s print deadline on Tuesday. The THS girls team also was 2-13 heading into play this week. Louisburg was 10-5 heading into their matchup Tuesday. Metro Academy’s boys team was 19-12 heading into play this week. The Metro girls record was not available online.

The THS boys finish the regular season with a home game Monday against Hayden (7-6), a road game Feb. 17 at Paola (2-12) and a home game Feb. 21 against Ottawa (6-8). The Tonganoxie girls have the same schedule in facing Hayden (9-4), Paola (3-12) and Ottawa (8-6).

Both Tonganoxie teams are coming of Frontier League losses at home Friday. The THS girls fell to Bonner Springs, 64-16, while the THS boys lost, 82-58.

The girls just couldn’t overcome a slow start. Bonner led 18-0 after a quarter and 38-2 at halftime.

The boys game started off as a back-and-forth affair. THS trailed just 9-7 in the first quarter, but Bonner went on an 11-0 run and led, 20-7, after a quarter. Tonganoxie scored 22 in the second quarter, but BSHS scored 27 of its own and held a 47-29 advantage. Bonner just kept rolling in the second half on its way to an 82-58 victory. Bonner has scored 82 or more points four times this season and 70 or more six times this season.
