Tonganoxie High’s Moore, Martin to wrestle in state finals Saturday

SALINA —Tonganoxie High boys wrestling is guaranteed three medals at this year’s Class 4A state championships, with a chance for two more. Amid those chances for medals, two could be gold.

THS enters Day 2 with five of its 10 state qualifiers advancing to Saturday at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.

Junior Braeden Moore will try to earn a state championship with his finals bout in the 132-pound class, while freshman Brady Martin could win gold in his first state appearance. Martin created a frenzy among Chieftain supporters mat side when he defeated Pratt sophomore Blake Winsor (33-12) in the 144 semifinals by a 4-3 decision. Next up in the finals is Owen Eck, an Andale junior who enters the match at 45-0. Moore, who placed third last year at state, will take on Independence junior Kohen Wright (38-5) in the finals Saturday.

Noah Bailey is ensured a second state medal Saturday. He will wrestle for third place Saturday after finishing as runner-up as a sophomore. All three of Bailey’s state matches have gone the full three rounds. He lost a tight match in the semifinals, 8-6, to Augusta senior Cannon Carey.

Colton Brusven and Hunter Benedict are the other Chieftains vying for a strong finish Saturday. Both went 1-1 Friday and need to win two matches in the consolation bracket to ensure a state medal.

Tonganoxie was in sixth place in the team standings after Friday’s matches with 57. Andale leads the field with 142. Rose Hill is in second with 105 and Paola third with 70.5.
