Eudora boys take 4th in Class 4A
The Eudora boys basketball team placed fourth at the Class 4A state basketball tournament Saturday.
EHS and Baldwin represented the Frontier League at state.
Eudora was the No. 4 seed and Baldwin the No. 5 seed, so the rivals, which had identical 18-4 records entering state, had to square off in the quarterfinals.
It was the lone first-round game that wasn’t decided by double digits.
The Cardinals came away with a 46-42 victory in overtime and advanced to the semifinals against No. 1 Hugoton, which defeated No. 8 Clay Center (9-14) by an 80-63 score. Hugoton then defeated Eudora in the semifinals, 55-35, and would eventually defeat No. 2 McPherson, 67-58, in the championship. Hugoton finished the season at 23-2, while McPherson went 21-4.
Eudora finished the year with a fourth-place finish at state and a 19-6 record. The Cardinals lost to No. 6 Bishop Miege, 65-55. Miege ended its season at 18-7.
Miege defeated No. 3 Atchison, 88-70, in the quarterfinals, while McPherson dropped No. 7 Wellington, 71-49, in the fourth quarterfinal game. Wellington finished its season 15-8, while Atchison finished 19-4.
Hugoton won its first state title Saturday. Miege had won the past two titles and three of the last four.
Miege girls capture crown again
Bishop Miege won another state title on the girls side.
BMHS, the No. 8 seed at 13-9, defeated No. 1 Wellington by a 71-40 score and then defeated No. 5 Hugoton, 59-38 in the semifinals. Miege then defeated No. 2 McPherson, 67-53, in the championship. BMHS finished the season 16-9.
In other quarterfinal games, Hugoton defeated No. 4 Independence, 53-40, while McPherson dropped No. 7 Hayden, 65-41. No. 3 Andale defeated No. 6 Parsons, 57-32.
Hugoton finished the season at 19-6 after defeating Andale, 44-38, in the third-place game. Andale took fourth and finished the year at 20-5.
Wellington went 21-2, Independence 18-5, Hayden 15-8 and Parsons 16-7.
Basehor-Linwood falls in quarterfinals
The Basehor-Linwood boys were another local team that advanced to state. BLHS was the No. 8 seed in 5A.
The Bobcats lost to No. 1 Highland Park, 60-49, in the quarterfinals. BLHS ended the year at 9-14 against the eventual third-place team. The Scots finished the year 24-1 after losing to eventual state champ Andover, 55-54, in the semifinals.

Other boys state champions were No. 3 Blue Valley Northwest (21-4) in 6A, No. 4 Andover (23-2) in 5A, No. 1 Hugoton (23-2) in 4A, No. 3 Hesston (25-1) in 3A, No. 3 Moundridge (23-3) in 2A and No. 2 Macksville (24-2) in 1A Division I and No. 1 Greeley County (25-1) in 1A D-II.
Other girls state champions were No. 3 Blue Valley North (21-4) in 5A, No. 4 St. Thomas Aquinas (22-3) in 5A, No. 2 Goodland (23-0) in 3A, No. 2 Elbing-Berean Academy (25-1) in 2A and No. 5 Highland-Doniphan West (21-5) in 1A D-I and No. 2 Hanover (26-0) in 1A D-II.
