Tonganoxie High assistant baseball coach Eric Staples conducts a fielding exercise Monday with THS players in the THS secondary gymnasium. The Chieftains open the season Tuesday at home against Eudora.

The Tonganoxie area hasn’t had the most springlike weather for spring break, but then it’s not officially spring for another week.

Regardless, some THS spring sports teams continued their preseason practice schedule this week with some sessions early in the week.

Some of those practices took place indoors. For instance, THS baseball and softball teams held practices indoors.

Preseason practices started Feb. 27, but it won’t be long before THS teams will get their 2023 schedules started. For many, the new season starts next week.

Tonganoxie High baseball begins its quest for another state berth with the squad’s season opener Tuesday at home against Eudora at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds. THS is coming off its best season in program history with a second-place finish at the state tournament and 20-4 record.

THS soccer also opens Tuesday at home. The girls team will host Atchison at 6 p.m. at Beatty Field. They’ll look to build on a 1-14 record in 2022.

THS softball begins the season later next week. Stephanie Wittman’s team gets the season started March 23 with a home doubleheader against Turner at the fairgrounds.

The Chieftains went 10-11 a year ago.

This year’s THS boys golf season opens March 30 at Sunflower Hills, while the boys and girls track seasons get started a day later when the teams head west March 31 for an invitational at Junction City. Boys golf placed fifth at state last year.
