Tonganoxie High track opens season at Free State; Rieke wins gold in shot, discus

Tonganoxie High track teams got the season started Friday with the Early Bird Invitational at Free State High in Lawrence.

The girls placed fifth with 48 points, while the boys placed sixth with 45.5 points.

St. James Academy won the girls meet with 110.5, while Free State was right behind as runner-up with 109.5.

Piper took third with 96, Hayden fourth with 57.5 and Shawnee Heights sixth with 38.5.

On the boys side, Free State won the meet with 149.6 points and St. James was second with 101.3.

Piper placed third with 78.5, Hayden fourth with 60.3 and Shawnee Heights fifth with 59.6.

On the girls side, Keagan Murray placed 13th with a time of 14.42 seconds.

Kara Johnson won silver in the 400, finishing with a time of 1:08.84. Molly Cullen placed 13th with a 1:19.99 time. Kinnley Hoffhines placed 11th in the 1,600 meters (6:20.27), while the 4×100 team of Mikinzi Smoots, Khrisalyn Wright, Alyssa Novotney and Keagan Murry finished sixth with a 54.99 time.

Adalyn Harder nabbed eighth in the high jump with a height of 4 feet, six inches.

In the girls pole vault, Smoots placed second with an 8-0 height.

Lucy Rieke won the shot put with a throw of 34-4.5. She also won the discus with a throw of 100-7. Aubrey Padfield placed third with a 78-7 throw and Lillia Chelbi sixth with a 72-7 throw. In the javelin, Addison Booker finished eighth with a 97-4 heave.

On the boys side, Kendall Smith took 11th in the boys 100 with a 12.01 time.

Eli Gilmore placed fifth in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:50.4, while Solomon Carter finished 14th in 5:17.05.

Gilmore also took second in the 3,200 with a 10:09.17 time. Carter finished 10th in the race (12:23.9) and Huston Albert 12th (12:45.88).

In the 4×100 meter relay, the THS team of Tanner Hand, Alex Stevens, Todd Brown and Isaiah Holthaus placed third with a 44.40 time. The 4×800 team of Michael Bottary, Gavin Shupe, Jett Gilmore and Solomon Carter placed second with a 9:01.8 time.

Ethan Butler placed third in the high jump with a 5-4 height, while Hayden Swallow and Cohein Newton placed 11th with a 5-0 height.

In the long jump, Isaiah Holthaus placed fifth (20-2.5), Owen Schmidt eighth (19-2.5) and Ethan Butler 12th (18-4.25).

Gavin Rhoads placed second in the discus with an 87-3 throw, while John Golba placed eighth (73-10).

Jacob Tuter placed 11th in the javelin with a 98-9 throw.

Next up for Tonganoxie is a meet Friday at Junction City. Other teams there are Junction City, Flint Hills Christian, Great Bend, Hutchinson, Manhattan, Salina Central and Salina South.

The Chieftains will have another meet a week later on April 7 at Basehor-Linwood with an 11-team meet down the road in Basehor.
