Tonganoxie High’s Santi Garcia (9) stands on second base as she awaits the next pitch from the Turner pitcher Thursday during a doubleheader against the Bears at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds. THS swept the series and improved to 11-3 on the season.

Tonganoxie High softball earned another sweep Thursday.

The Chieftains defeated Turner, 10-7, and then 13-3. The second game ended in 5 innings due to the mercy rule.

The second game was tied, 3-3, after Turner rallied, but THS answered with 10 runs over multiple innings.

Turner scored first in both games, but Tonganoxie answered in the second inning in each game and never trailed after that.

In the first game, Santi Garcia led the team in hits with three. Savannah Booker, Abby Ckalrson and Mariah Herrera all had doubles. Farrah Halsa, Mariah Herrera, Emerson Maslak and Kylie Vandervoort all had triples in the victory, while six Chieftain batters had one or more RBI: Savannah Booker, Charleigh Craine, Garcia (2), Halsa (2), Mariah Herrera (3) and Maslak.

Isaacs worked 4 innings, giving up 6 runs on 8 hits. She struck out 8 and gave up 4 walks and a homer.

All but 1 run was earned. Halsa threw 3 innings and gave up 3 hits and an earned run. She also had 3 strikeouts.

In the second game, Clarkson led the team in hits with four. Herrera, Maslak and Jordyn Vorbeck all had doubles, while Halsa connected for a triple. Overall, six Chieftain batters had one more RBI: Booker (2), Garcia, Herrera, Maslak (2), Vandervoort (2) and Vorbeck.

Halsa threw 5 innings of work, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits. Only one of the runs was earned and she had 5 strikeouts.

“I think we are in a great spot heading into the last couple weeks of the season,” THS coach Stephanie Wittman said after Thursday’s game. “We have great competition coming up to get ready for regionals.

“They’re hitting their stride right now and it’s great to see.”

Tonganoxie improved to 11-3 on the season. THS has won six in a row heading into this week. The Chieftains also defeated Baldwin, 10-0 and 9-2 on April 25 at home.

Tuesday’s doubleheader took place after The Mirror’s print deadline and on paper looked to be a big series.

Both teams are 11-3 overall and 3-2 in Frontier League play.

Heading into play this week, Ottawa was the No. 2 seed and Tonganoxie the No. 3 in the Class 4A East Regional.

If regionals were based on those standings, THS would host a regional against No. 14 Louisburg (6-11), No. 6 Independence (11-4) and No. 11 Rock Creek (7-7).
