Tonganoxie High softball sweeps Jeff West, enters regionals at 13-7
Tonganoxie High softball nearly pulled off a couple rallies last week, but fell short.
Late-inning rallies against Ottawa and Piper weren’t quite enough as the Chieftains were swept in both doubleheaders.
Playing at home May 2 against Ottawa, THS fell behind, 3-0, in the second inning. Tonganoxie gave up a single, two walks and two more singles. The Cyclones led, 1-0, with 2 outs and then got a couple more runs on that final single of the inning. OHS added an insurance run later in the sixth inning. THS just didn’t have any answers for Ottawa. The Chieftains had a hit in three different innings, but couldn’t get any runners into scoring position. Savannah Booker had two of the hits, while Charleigh Craine had the third. Sage Isaacs gave up 4 runs on 9 hits. She also struck out two and walked two.
In Game 2, THS had a 2-1 lead when Ottawa scored 4 runs in the top of the fifth. The Cyclones added 2 more in the top of the seventh before the Chieftains staged a rally.
THS scored 4 runs in the bottom of the seventh, but fell a run short, 7-6. Booker stood at second with a double after batting in 2 runs with 1 out, but two pop outs left her stranded at second.
Abby Clarkson led the team with 3 hits. Kylie Vandervoort and Mariah Herrera each had 2 hits. Farrah Halsa also had a double for the Chieftains.
Defensively, Halsa pitched all 7 innings. She gave up 7 runs on 12 hits, with five of the runs earned. She also had 5 strikeouts against OHS.
On Thursday, THS trailed Piper, 10-1, after three innings, but Tonganoxie rallied with runs in the next three innings. It wouldn’t be enough, as the Chieftains lost, 11-7. The Pirates scored 5 runs in both the second and third innings.
Vandervoort led the team in hits with four. Jordyn Vorbeck and Mariah Herrera each had a double for THS in Game 1 as well.
Isaacs pitched 6 innings. She gave up 11 runs on 11 hits, struck out four and walked five in the loss. Of those 11 runs, six were earned runs.
In the second game, THS had a 5-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, but Piper scored 2 runs in the fifth and sixth innings. THS scored a run in the top of the seventh, but fell a run short again, 7-6.
Clarkson had 3 hits and Vandervoort 2 hits in the loss. Santi Garcia, Herrera and Isaacs had the other three hits.
Halsa gave up 7 runs on 11 hits, five of which were earned runs. She struck out five in the loss.
Tonganoxie did bounce back for a sweep of Jeff West on Monday. The Chieftains defeated the Tigers, 4-3, and then 12-1 in five innings. More on those games in next week’s print edition of The Mirror.
The victories helped THS finish the regular season at 13-7. Teams are finishing up the regular season this week, but THS currently is the No. 7 seed in the Class 4A East Regional.
Tonganoxie still has a shot at one of the Top 4 seeds in the East Bracket.
Wamego currently is the No. 1 seed at 15-1.
