Baldock, Brusven advance to 4A state golf for Tonganoxie
Tonganoxie High boys golf missed a state berth by 4 shots Monday, but THS will have two individual qualifiers.
The Chieftains placed fourth with a team score of 343 at a Class 4A regional at Holton Country Club. Hayden placed third with a 339. The top three teams from each regional advance to state next week.
Tonganoxie, though, will have two individual qualifiers in senior Remi Baldock and junior Colton Brusven.
Baldock placed eighth individually with an 81, while Brusven placed 15th with an 86.
Senior Gabe Seba tied for 17th with an 87, while sophomore Zachary Fisher tied for 22nd with an 89. Senior Carter Gratton tied for 26th with teammate and freshman Lachlan McRae and Wamego freshman Regan Kueker. Each shot a 92.
Tonganoxie’s shot at a second straight state team appearance fell short. THS placed fifth last year in a rain-shortened championship.
“It was a wet and windy day,” THS coach Doug Sandburg said about Monday’s regional. “We did not perform at our best and missed out on going to state as a team. We just had too many big numbers and it allowed us to fall four shots short of state.”
THS still will have representation with Baldock and Brusven competing individually next Monday at the 4A state championships at Winfield’s Quail Ridge Golf Course.
“They have worked hard all year; they had a solid day,” Sandburg said about Baldock and Brusven. “They will need to work hard over the next week to make the cut at state next week.”
Wamego won the Holton regional with a 318. Bishop Miege placed second with a 322.
Wamego, Miege and Hayden advance to state as full teams. Wellington, Winfield and Pratt were the state qualifiers from the Ulysses regional, while Independence, Chanute and Coffeyville are the Top 3 from the Coffeyville regional. The Butler Regional took place Tuesday after The Mirror’s print deadline.
The 12 state teams and individual qualifiers will compete on Day 1 of state next Monday in Winfield. The Top 6 teams and select individual qualifiers will advance to Day 2 on Tuesday.
