Miege wins rematch, thwarts Tonganoxie bid for back-to-back state volleyball appearances
Tonganoxie needed to defeat Bishop Miege a second time this season for a chance to get back to state in 2023.
That didn’t happen in a Class 4A substate Saturday in Chanute.
THS, the No. 6 seed in the East Bracket, fell to No. 11 Bishop Miege, 25-16, 25-18.
The first set started out electric as expected, with both teams going back and forth in winning volleys. Miege, though started to take control and eventually secured a 25-16 Set 1 victory. Tonganoxie just wasn’t able to bounce back in the second set. THS fared slightly better, but just didn’t have enough answers for Miege, which won Set 2, 25-18.
No. 3 Chanute defeated No. 14 Labette County, 25-19, 25-20, in the first semifinal match. LCHS finished the season 10-21, while Chanute advanced to take on Miege.
The Blue Comets didn’t provide much of a challenge for the Stags in the finals. Miege won the finals, 25-8, 25-17. Chanute finished its season 26-9, while Miege heads to state with a 19-17 record.
Tonganoxie finished up the season 24-14.
First-year THS coach Barry Lenth reflected on the substate and the season in general after the loss to the Stags.
“It’s tough because Miege all year long has been the top team and it’s unfortunate we have to play in the first round of substate,” Lenth said. “We needed to stay in system. I think we did a good job of getting them out of system, but we couldn’t get in system.”
When the teams played during the regular season at the Ottawa Invitational, THS won both sets by just two, with one set going to 27. Both teams had key players out of the lineup that match, but with both teams mostly at full strength at substate, Miege got the upper hand.
Lenth said he talked to the team after the match about this year’s player leadership.
“The senior class should be proud,” Lenth said. “They raised the bar with back-to-back 20-plus win seasons. They didn’t go back to state, but it’s not because they were not good enough to get there. They beat Miege during the regular season. They did their job in raising the bar.
“I’m very proud of them. Hopefully the underclassmen see how hurt the seniors are and keep that inside and work really hard over the summer.”
Seniors playing in their final match in THS volleyball uniforms Saturday were outside hitter Mikinzi Smoots, setter Kasia Baldock, libero/defensive specialist Bailey Poje and middle hitter Lucy Rieke.
Miege will be the No. 8 seed at the 4A state championships Friday and Saturday at Hutchinson Sports Arena.
The Frontier League has two state teams this year: No. 4 Eudora (23-8) and No. 6 Louisburg (24-14).
Other state teams are No. 1 Clearwater (35-3), No. 2 Towanda-Circle (33-5) and No. 3 McPherson (29-9).
Andale (27-10) is the No. 5 seed and Holton (25-15) is the No. 7 seed.
No. 1 Clearwater, No. 4 Eudora, No. 5 Andale and No. 8 Bishop Miege are in Pool 1, while No. 2 Towanda-Circle, No. 3 McPherson, No. 6 Louisburg and No. 7 Holton are in Pool 2.
The top two teams in each pool advance to the semifinals Saturday. Semifinals winners will play in the state championship, while semifinal losers will meet in the third-place match.
Matches start at 3:30 p.m. Friday. Semifinal matches will start at 1 p.m. Saturday.
