Tonganoxie High cross country dual is Saturday vs. Lansing; moved up to 8 a.m.
Tonganoxie had its Red/White Scrimmage bright and early Saturday, but the weather was much better than the excessive heat last week.
The girls race started at 7 a.m. and then the boys race after it.
“We didn’t really sell it to the kids as a race,” THS coach John Tollefson said. It was more of a chance to run a 5K under race-like conditions.
“I feel good about how the kids performed. Some of them it was just conquering the distance. Others it was how they would compare to previous year starts.”
Senior Kinnley Hoffhines and Junior Kara Johnson came in first with finishes of 24 minutes, 45 seconds. Sophomore Autumn Wilson finished third with a 26:28 time.
Junior Solomon Carter won the boys race in 19:07. Senior Michael Bottary finished second for the boys with a 192:21 time, while freshman Parker Welsh placed third in 19:53.
Tonganoxie has made it through much of the preseason with a pretty healthy bunch. Tollefson said there are some aches and pains on the team, but “nothing major” as far as injuries.
The team opens the regular season with a dual against Lansing on Saturday at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.
The dual is part of the longest continually contested meet in the state.
Saturday’s races now will begin at 8 a.m. The schedule was moved up due to anticipated excessive heat.
