Ranked teams aplenty dot field for Rossville Invitational volleyball, including Tonganoxie

Tonganoxie High senior Mikinzi Smoots (1) is all smiles after THS earns a point Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023, against Leavenworth at Chieftain Arena. THS defeated Pleasant Ridge and Leavenworth in two sets in the battle of Leavenworth County teams. THS improved to 4-2 overall with the victories. The Chieftains are preparing for their first tournament of the season. THS travels west for the Rossville Invitational, which is Saturday morning.The Rossville Invitational should provide a good early season test for the Tonganoxie High volleyball team.
Of the 10 teams in the field, five were ranked in their respective classes in the Kansas Volleyball Association’s Week 1 rankings. THS is included in that list of ranked teams.
Those teams are No. 6 Abilene (5-5) and No. 8 Tonganoxie (4-2) in Class 4A, No. 3 Silver Lake (9-2) and No. 6 Rossville (4-1) in 3A and No. 10 Pleasant Ridge (10-1) in 2A.
THS swept PRHS this past week during a triangular at Tonganoxie.
Other 4A schools participating are Holton (7-5), Ottawa (4-5), Hayden (4-8) and Wamego (1-3). At 12-1, Osage City is the other 3A school in the invitational field.
The invitational starts at 8 a.m. Saturday in Rossville.
Tonganoxie also has home matches Monday against Atchison (3-4) and Tuesday against Ottawa before the Chieftains’ home invitational next Saturday at Chieftain Arena.
