Tonganoxie High volleyball wins Rossville Invitational, moves to 10-2 on season
The Tonganoxie High volleyball team brought home a big-time plaque Saturday.
THS won the Rossville Invitational by going a perfect 6-0.
The Chieftains defeated Abilene (25-15, 23-25, 25-17), Osage City (25-18, 25-16), Silver Lake (25-19, 25-16), Hayden (25-19, 25-15) and Wamego (25-12, 25-9).
In the championship, Tonganoxie and Silver Lake met for a rematch. The second meeting went three sets. THS won 25-17, but Silver Lake bounced back for a 25-16 decision in the second set. The deciding set ended up being the best, as THS outlasted Silver Lake, 25-23.
THS coach Barry Lenth was pleased with Saturday’s effort.
“The girls played really well,” he said. “it was probably the best we have played all year.”
Lenth saw his players rise to the occasion at Rossville.
“Both of our middles, Lucy and Finley, played really strong games, both offensively and defensively,” Lenth said, referring to the Rieke sisters. “Outside in Mikinzi Smoots had by far the best matches she has played all year.
“We got strong serve receive performance by both libero Bailey Poje and our defensive specialist Kaitlyn Dale.”
The first-year THS coach said there was a downside to Saturday’s tournament, as one of the team’s setters, Kalea Baldock, tore her ACL and will be out the rest of the season.
Tonganoxie improved to 10-2 on the season after Saturday’s tournament. The Chieftains opened the season 0-2, but have rattled off 10 straight victories.
Next up for THS is Atchison (3-5) on Monday at Chieftain Arena. Tonganoxie also is home Tuesday against Ottawa (7-7). The Cyclones are 3-0 in Frontier League play, while the Chieftains are 1-0.
On Saturday, THS will welcome several teams to the Tonganoxie Invitational at Chieftain Arena.
