Tonganoxie High basketball
The shots weren’t always falling and the miscues sometimes plentiful, but the Tonganoxie High girls basketball team stayed the course and eventually pulled away for a big 47-34 road victory Friday against Jefferson County North in Winchester.
The teams battled back and forth for three quarters and at times both had challenges scoring — and keeping possession of the basketball. Each team committed eight turnovers in the first quarter. The game was tied, 6-6, after a quarter and then JCN went into the locker room with a 17-16 lead. THS then led, 28-27, after three quarters before Tonganoxie scored 19 in the final quarter on its way to the notable victory.
The Chieftains moved to 3-0 for the first time since 2012-13. THS finished 15-8 that season.
Tonganoxie struggled from 3-point land Friday. Alyssa Schoeneck scored THS’ first three-pointer about two minutes into the third quarter, but Tonganoxie started connecting on more shots.
Herrara made it 31-27 with a three of her won early in the fourth quarter. That bucket helped spark a 13-0 run for the Chieftains in the fourth quarter. The Chargers first points came with about 5 minutes left in the game. By then, the Chieftains had built a 41-29 advantage.
Schoeneck scored a game-high 16 points, while Emerson Maslack and Addy Schooler also were in double figures with 13 and 12, respectively.
Tonganoxie returns to Frontier League play Tuesday when Spring Hill comes to town. The Broncos are 1-1 on the season, as SHHS opened the season with a 52-18 victory at Emporia and then lost, 59-36, Friday at home against Hayden.
