Tonganoxie High boys wrestling wins Randy Starcher Invitational for 4th straight year
The Tonganoxie High boys wrestling team defended its home turf once again at the Randy Starcher Invitational on Saturday at Chieftain Arena.
THS won the title for the fourth consecutive season, but won the championship this year by just one point.
Tonganoxie scored 202, while Savannah (Mo.) finished with 201. Last year, THS finished ahead of runner-up Savannah, 285-211.
Brady Martin (10-2) won gold for the Chieftains in the 157-pound division. The THS junior defeated St. Thomas Aquinas senior Trever Mogren (10-5) by a 14-7 decision. Martin finished the day 5-0 with two falls, two technical falls and then the decision.
Brodie Starcher (7-4), Tyler Christ (8-3) and Silas McCoy (9-3) all placed second in their respective classes.
THS coach Brett Delich was pleased to notch another home tournament title, but he saw an area that needs improvement.
“I thought we came out well and did what we wanted to,” Delich said. “But we gotta be tougher. We wrestled well, but as a whole need to be tougher in matches that matter.”
The meet was the final competition of the 2024 portion of the schedule.
Tonganoxie’s schedule will resume in about three weeks, so the Chieftains will have time during winter break to fine-tune things.
“We’re about where we should be in late December,” Delich said. “We have a very young team. There’s a high ceiling of potential in the next month and a half.
“We just need to be tougher in tight matches.”
Tonganoxie next is in action Jan. 10 and 11 at the Larry Wilkey Invitational in Jenks, Okla.
