Tonganoxie High boys wrestling placed second as a team Saturday at the Class 4A championships at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina.

The Chieftains also nabbed a school-record three gold medals Saturday. THS won six medals total, with all six wrestlers winning their final match.

Rose Hill captured its first team title. The Rockets scored 157.5. Tonganoxie scored 127 for second and Paola 119 for third.

The Chieftains also will be chasing a team trophy. THS was in second place after Day 2 with 104 points. Rose Hill leads the field with 124.5.

THS qualified 10 for state after winning its regional Feb. 17 at Chieftain Arena.

Brodie Starcher was eliminated Thursday after losing two matches.

Clayton Crookham, Dax Duffett and Gavin Rhoads advanced to Day 2, but lost for the second time in the tourney Friday and were eliminated.

Tyler Chrisp, Braeden Moore, Noah Bailey and Tyler Pankey all went 2-0 Thursday and advanced to Friday’s championship semifinals.

Chrisp was one round away from a championship bout when he lost Friday morning, but he still can finish as high as third.

Brady Martin and Colton Brusven went 1-1 Thursday and have won again Friday.

Moore, Bailey and Pankey all punched tickets to state with semifinal victories Friday.

Pankey also will have a regional rematch in his state championship bout. He’ll meet Holton’s Dalton Roush in the finals. Pankey outlasted Roush nearly a week ago in the regional finals in Tonganoxie.

All six wrestlers advancing to Saturday will be bringing home medals.

Chrisp, Martin and Brusven will finish anywhere from third to sixth place. Moore, Bailey and Pankey will either be state champs or runners-up.
