Tonganoxie High girls wrestling wins 2 golds, a silver on way to 6th place as team at Newton
Tonganoxie High girls wrestling places sixth out of 21 teams and was the highest-placing Class 4-1A Thursday at the Newton Tournament of Champions. Teams finishing ahead of THS were either 6A or 5A teams.
Stella Bradley and Grace Stean both won gold for the Chieftains.
Bradley, a THS junior, got a big victory in the 115-pound championship against Garden City freshman Crystal Loera (22-2). Loera is ranked No. 3 in 6-5A. Bradley, who improved to 15-4 with the finals victory, won by fall in the second period (3:00). Bradley is ranked No. 5 in 4-1A.
Stean also improved to 15-4 after defeating Eureka senior Makyla Gore (14-5) by a 5-1 decision in the 170 finals. Stean, a junior, is ranked No. 3 in 4-1A.
Autumn Wilson placed second for the Chieftains at 110. Wilson, a THS sophomore, lost to Newton sophomore Avery Hinojos (17-2) in the 110 finals by a 6-1 decision. Hinojos is ranked No. 2 in 6-5A, while Wilson (16-3) is ranked No. 5 in 4-1A.
At 140, Mackenzie Colgrove (9-9) placed sixth after losing to Andover junior Olivia Randle (10-8). Colgrove, a THS junior, lost by fall in the first period (1:28).
Tonganoxie will be sending wrestlers to a tournament Friday and Saturday at Olathe South.
Other teams there will be Olathe Northwest, Olathe East, Haysville-Campus, Liberty (Mo.), Belton (Mo.), Ozark (Mo.), Baldwin and Olathe West.
