Tonganoxie High basketball

It’s time for the annual action-packed week of basketball in Tonganoxie.

The 65th annual Tonganoxie Invitational started Monday.

On the boys side, quarterfinal games Monday were No. 1 Atchison 89, No. 8 Christ Prep 49; No. No. 7 Metro Academy 62, No. 2 Eudora 58; No. 3 Bonner Springs 63, No. 6 Tonganoxie 56; and No. 4 No. 5 Wamego 39, Schlagle 26.

Tonganoxie lost to defending tourney champion Bonner Springs, 63-56. THS had a chance to either cut the Bonner lead to 59-58 with a layup or tie with a kickout three-pointer, but BSHS thwarted the THS possession and held on for the victory.

THS led, 29-28, at halftime against Bonner, but a rough third quarter had Tonganoxie playing catch-up. Bonner outscored Tonganoxie, 19-6, in the quarter. The Chieftains put together a furious rally in the fourth quarter with 21 points, but just couldn’t quite get over that hump in the final minute.

Tonganoxie had some struggles from the free-throw line, as the team finished the game 5-for-13. BSHS also missed eight free throws, but went 12-for-20.

THS shot 40% from the field, including 7-for-20 from beyond the three-point line, but Bonner finished 51.2% from the field (22-for-43), including 7-for-16 from three-point land.

Both team shad 31 second-chance points and outrebounded BSHS, 33-28.

Tonganoxie had four players score in double figures: Alex Crowley with 14, Zekkiah Glover with 11 and Lachlan McRae and Owen Schmidt with 10 each.

Bonner Springs’ JAckson Nez had a game-high 15, while Jason Jones scored 14 and Kalen Streit 13.

Metro defeated Eudora, 62-58, Monday, so THS and Eudora will play at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in the consolation bracket.

On the girls side, quarterfinal games Tuesday were No. 1 Eudora (6-0) vs. No. 8 Holton (1-5), No. 2 Wamego (6-0) vs. No. 7 Tonganoxie (1-4), No. 3 Blue Valley West (4-3) vs. No. 6 St. James Academy (1-2) and No. 4 Piper (4-4) vs. No. 5 Bonner Springs (2-3). Those games took place after The Mirror’s print deadline.

Games Thursday and Friday will start at 3 p.m., 4:30 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Championship and consolation bracket games will be played Thursday (boys) and Friday (girls), with medal round games to be played Saturday.

Games will start at 10 a.m. Saturday with consolation bracket games.

The girls championship will be at 4:30 p.m. and the boys championship at 6 p.m. Saturday at Chieftain Arena.
