Cold 3rd quarter spoils strong 1st half for Tonganoxie High boys basketball in tourney loss to Eudora

The Tonganoxie High boys basketball team erased a 7-0 deficit against Eudora on Thursday at the Tonganoxie Invitational.

THS took the lead later in the quarter and was up, 18-14, heading into the second quarter. The Chieftains continued to roll. The game went back-and-forth, but THS increased its lead and was up, 34-29, after two quarters.

Then came the kryptonite that has hampered THS often this season: halftime, or more specifically, the third quarter.

THS has struggled when the team comes back out of the locker room for the third quarter often this season.

The Chieftains started out with more offensive productivity at the start of the third, but was outscored, 14-6, for the entire quarter. On the flip side, THS only trailed, 43-40, entering the fourth quarter, but Cardinals continued to build their lead and had their largest lead of the night, 53-43. THS tried to rally, but eventually fell, 58-53.

The had four lead changes and four ties. Tonganoxie’s biggest run was 10-2, while Eudora’s was 13-3.

Eudora shot just 41.2% from the free-throw line (7-for-17) compared to 60% for Tonganoxie (6-for-10).

THS had more points off turnovers (13-6), while Eudora had more bench points (7-5). Each team had 24 rebounds on the night.

Eudora shot nearly 57% from the field (21-37) overall and about 56% from three-point land (9-for-16).

Tonganoxie shot nearly 44% from the field (20-for-46). The Chieftains also were 7-for-21 from beyond the three-point line (7-for-21).

Owen Schmidt had a big night for THS. He scored a game-high 22 points, 18 of which came in the first half. Lachlan McRae also was in double figures with 11, while Alex Crowley had 8. For McRae, 9 of his 11 points came from three-pointers. Logan Sullivan led Eudora scorers with 21, while Nick Youngskin and 11 and Connor Watson 10 for the Cardinals.

Tonganoxie will take on Christ Prep at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the THS auxiliary gymnasium in the seventh-place game.

Christ Prep lost to Schlagle, 68-63, in the other consolation semifinal Thursday.

In championship bracket semifinal games, Atchison defeated Wamego, 54-42, and Metro Academy outlasted Bonner Springs, 79-71.

Schlagle will meet Eudora in the fifth-place game at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Chieftain Arena. Wamego and Bonner Springs will square off for third place at 2:30 p.m. and Atchison and Metro Academy will play in the championship at 6 p.m.
