Tonganoxie girls soccer faces Eudora in regional play Monday; boys golf, softball moved to Tuesday
Tonganoxie High girls soccer is the lone THS team still slated to play Monday in postseason action.
THS boys golf and girls softball now will compete Tuesday in their respective tournaments due to rain.
Tonganoxie girls soccer (7-8-1) is the No. 10 seed in the Class 4-1A East Bracket and will play No. 7 Eudora (9-7) at 6 p.m. Monday at EHS. Eudora won the regular-season clash, 3-1, on April 4 at THS.
The boys golf team originally was to compete in a 4A regional Monday at Clay Center, but soggy conditions have forced officials to move the tourney to Tuesday. As of now, the meet will start at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
THS softball was to play its regional Monday afternoon at Eudora, but with rain expected throughout the day and EHS’ ballpark having a natural surface, the games have been moved to Tuesday. The Tonganoxie-Eudora soccer match is played on artificial turf at the football stadium.
That could be an added plus for the THS baseball team if there is precipitation in the Fort Scott area. FSHS has field turf, so Tonganoxie will be playing on artificial turf at its regional.
Tonganoxie baseball is the No. 12 seed in the East Bracket and will face No. 5 Chanute (17-9) in a regional semifinal game at 2 p.m. Tuesday. No. 4 Fort Scott (19-7) takes on Bishop Miege (10-13) in the second semifinal. Semifinal winners will meet in the championship Tuesday evening at Fort Scott. THS baseball hasn’t faced anyone in its regional previously this season.
THS softball is the No. 7 seed in the 4A East Bracket. The Chieftains now will take on No. 10 Louisburg (11-14) at 3 p.m. Tuesday in an all-Frontier League regional. No. 2 Eudora (20-4) meets No. 15 Paola (6-18) in the other regional semifinal and then the winners of the two semifinals will meet in the regional championship later Tuesday.
There’s also a possibility that the tournament will be moved to Lawrence High if conditions are too wet in Eudora. LHS has an artificial playing surface and actually was the site of a Eudora regional a few years ago in which Tonganoxie played. That regional moved to LHS because of rain as well.
As for this seaon, Tonganoxie softball has met every regional opponent in the regular season. THS lost to Eudora, 6-3, April 4 in a tight battle at home. The Chieftains swept the Paola Panthers, 4-0 and 9-6, at home April 9 and split with Louisburg on April 11. THS won the first game, 5-3, and then lost the second game, 9-4, at home.
The winner of the Tonganoxie-Eudora girls soccer match will play Thursday on the road in the regional finals. No. 2 Topeka-Cair Paravel/Mission Valley (11-4-1) has a first-round bye and would have the higher seed regardless of who wins the THS-EHS match.
