Brusven qualifies for state golf as Tonganoxie just misses qualifying as full team
Just 5 shots separated Tonganoxie from a state berth Tuesday at the Clay Center Country Club, the Chieftains still will have representation next Monday at the Class 4A boys golf championships in McPherson.
THS finished in fourth place with a team score of 321. Concordia scored 316 for third and Clay Center 314 for second. Defending state champion Wamego ran away with the regional title with a 284.
The top three teams advance to state, but the Top 5 individual golfers not on a state team also advance.
That means THS senior Colton Brusven again has qualified for state as an individual. He placed 10th last year at state when he was one of two individual qualifiers for THS. Remi Balddock was Tonganoxie’s other representative. He placed second and was one stroke behind state champion Anderson Helmer of Towanda-Circle.
This year, Brusven took ninth at state after shooting a 77.
Sophomore Lachlan McRae shot a 79 and tied for 16th at the Clay Center Regional. Junior Zac Fisher shot an 82, good for 25th, while sophomore Wesley Johnson tied for 27th with an 83.Senior Gavin Reischman shot an 87 and placed 32nd, while fellow senior Aiden Van Middlesworth placed 35th with an 89.
Holton (323), Rock Creek (337), Atchison (370) and Abilene (374) rounded out the rest of the team standings at Clay Center.
