Tonganoxie football scores 49 in 1st quarter, throttles Schlagle

Tonganoxie football got out to a hot start and never looked back in its Week 9 playoff game Friday against Schlagle

Brady Martin scored on a 19-yard touchdown with about 100 seconds into the game and was off to the races. THS led, 56-6, at halftime and went on to win, 63-6, after a running clock in the second half.

The Chieftains quite possibly set a school record for points in one quarter Friday. THS scored 49 points in the first half and led, 49-6 heading into the second quarter.

Martin, Tanner Hand (2) and Alex Stevens (2) all scored rushing touchdowns against the Stallions. Gavin Rhoads also was credited with a rushing touchdown after recovering a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown.

Stevens and Hand led THS rushers with 81 and 78 yards, respectively.

Alex Gardea, Jacob Morenz and Kipton Harder had receiving touchdowns for THS.

Talon Langford was 3-for-7 with 62 yards and two touchdowns with his arm at quarterback. Bodee Maslak was 4-for-10 for 58 yards and a touchdown.

THS, the No. 5 seed in the Class 4A East Bracket, moved to 6-3 on the season and will play No. 4 Fort Scott (6-3) at 7 p.m. Friday in Fort Scott. FSHS also breezed to a Week 9 victory. Fort Scott defeated Coffeyville, 49-0.

The winner of the THS-Fort Scott will either play at No. 1 Atchison (8-1) or at home against No. 8 Lansing (5-4) the following Friday. Those two teams square off this Friday in Atchison. Other regional games are No. 15 Bishop Miege (2-7) at No. 10 Labette County (5-4) and No. 6 Ottawa (6-3) at No. 3 Chanute (7-2) in the East Bracket.

In the Class 4A West Bracket, the regional pairings are No. 8 McPherson (5-4) at No. 1 Wamego (8-1), No. 5 Buhler (7-2) at No. 4 Mulvane (7-2), No. 7 Winfield (6-3) at No. 2 Andover Central (8-1) and No. 6 Kapaun Mt. Carmel (7-2) at No. 3 Wellington (7-2).

Louisburg, the No. 2 seed in the East Bracket, lost to No. 15 Bishop Miege, 21-14, Friday at Louisburg.
