The long road trip turned out to be well worth it Saturday for the Tonganoxie High boys soccer team.

Tonganoxie traveled roughly 160 miles to take on Augusta and the Chieftains returned home with a 4-0 victory against the Orioles.

THS picked up its first victory of the season with the big win, while Augusta dropped to 5-9-1.

The Chieftains have been finding the net more often offensively lately. The team scored two goals Oct. 8 in a 6-2 loss at home against Bishop Miege. Entering play this week, the team has scored six goals in its last three matches. The team had scored two goals in its previous 10 contests.

Carter Watson, Sam Farrow, Silas Kirchoff and Cody Lobb all scored goals for THS. Emery Weiser had two assists, as did Kirchoff and Weiser.

“It kind of built their confidence up more that they can do it,” THS coach Jon Orndorff said about getting in the win column. “The pieces have been here and there this year and in this game we put it all together.

“And it wasn’t just one guy scoring. It was everybody contributing.”

The two teams last played in 2021 on a memorable fall afternoon at Topeka’s Hummer Park. The Chieftains defeated the Orioles in overtime that day in the Class 4-3-2-1A third-place match.

Orndorff said the two programs have been trying to schedule a match since then.

“We had been trying the last couple years and hadn’t been able to make it work,” Orndorff explained. “We found a weekend that would work for us both (this year).”

Tonganoxie was on the road for the third consecutive time Tuesday with a match at Basehor-Linwood (0-12). Before defeating Augusta, THS lost on the road at Louisburg, 6-0, on Thursday against a Wildcat team that moved to 7-5 on the season with the win.

Tonganoxie plays Paola (2-9-1) on Thursday at Beatty Field for the final home match of the season and then finishes out the regular season Oct. 24 at Topeka Seaman (7-4). Senior Night festivities are expected to start around 5:45 p.m. Thursday.

“This week looks very promising and a couple teams we can play our game how we want and hopefully come away with some victories and have a great Senior Night Thursday,” Orndorff said.

The BLHS match took place after The Mirror’s print deadline, but more about the match can be found online and in next week’s print edition.
