Tonganoxie scores on fourth down in the third quarter against Louisburg on Friday, Sept. 5, 2024, at Wildcat Stadium.

LOUISBURG — Tonganoxie High looked to be in solid position to snap a three-game losing streak against Louisburg after a slow start Friday at Wildcat Stadium, but LHS would eventually win the overtime thriller, 21-20, and keep its hold on the series in recent years.

The Wildcats had a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter, but the Chieftains would answer with a big Tanner Hand touchdown run.

THS tacked on another touchdown in the third quarter as its defense really came to life. The teams did not score in the fourth quarter, which meant the second overtime game in four years between the two Frontier League rivals.

LHS won, 34-28, in 2021 on the same field.

Louisburg went on offense first in overtime Friday in the south end zone. The Wildcats worked quickly and scored their touchdown (each team has four downs to score from the 10-yard-line).

Tonganoxie would answer with a touchdown of its own, but THS coach Preston Troyer elected to go for two and the potential win instead of trying the point-after touchdown kick like Louisburg.

Tonganoxie tried to run the ball up the gut, but LHS snuffed it out and the Wildcats preserved their winning streak against THS and unbeaten streak against Frontier League teams overall.

The Wildcats went undefeated in league play in 2022 and 2023. Their last loss in conference play was Oct. 22, 2021, when Paola defeated LHS, 21-7.

For the Chieftains, it was a one-point loss in the series for the second consecutive season. Louisburg won, 30-29, last season at THS. Louisburg also won, 49-0, in 2022, in the only recent game in the series to not be decided by a touchdown or less.

Tonganoxie had more total yards (216-194) and rushing yards (182-55), while Louisburg dominated the passing game (139-34).

Louisburg had two turnovers to Tonganoxie’s one and all were interceptions.

Louisburg fared slightly better on third-down conversions, as the Wildcats went 4-for-12 while the Chieftains went 1-for-9.

Tonganoxie will look to even its record this Friday when Spring Hill comes to town. The Broncos are 1-0 after defeating Bonner Springs, 43-0, on the road Friday.
