Tonganoxie produced the Tanner Hand Show in the first quarter at Lansing and then held on in the second half for what became a thriller late. It eventually became the Chieftains’ first victory of the season, 14-13.

THS scored all of its points in the first quarter. Tanner Hand rushed for a 34-yard touchdown run with 6:30 left in the first quarter and then on Tonganoxie’s next offensive possession, made something out of a potential tackle-for-loss in the backfield and scampered 51 yards for the Tonganoxie’s second touchdown with 2:35 left in the first quarter. Hand’s run came on third down for THS.

A Todd Brown interception near the THS 40 on Lansing’s ensuing possession after the first score also helped set up the big touchdown later in the quarter.

Tonganoxie was threatening again in the second quarter, but THS quarterback Talon Langford, who was under pressure in the backfield on fourth-and-8 deep in Lansing territory, threw a pick 6 and Lansing cut the lead to 14-7.

Lansing scored again with 6:16 left in the third quarter, but the Lions had a mishandled snap on the point-after try and couldn’t convert.

Tonganoxie pinned Lansing on its own 1-yard-line after a Langford punt dropped right in front of the end zone and Alex Stephens kept it in the field of play for the big special teams play.

Lansing had to punt it away on its next possession, but THS couldn’t take advantage of prime field position around the Lansing 40.

With 5:37 left in the game, THS was at the Lansing 12 on fourth down and 2, but turned the ball over on downs.

Two plays later, Lansing broke free for a big run that put THS at the Tonganoxie 43.

Lansing moved further into THS territory and lined up for a 35-yard field goal, but after back-to-back timeouts, Lansing opted to go for the first down and couldn’t convert.

The Lions got the ball back and with a big pass reception got LHS inside the Tonganoxie 20 again.

A Lansing rushing play with 47 seconds left looked to be heartache again for Tonganoxie, but Brady Martin knocked out the ball right before the goal line. Tonganoxie recovered and held on in a Week 3 thriller. Lansing had some late penalties as Tonganoxie tried to finish out the game in the victory formation, so tempers continued to flare late, but THS eventually was able to run out the clock.

Tonganoxie moved to 1-2 on the season, while Lansing suffered its first loss of the season and dropped to 2-1.

THS now will be back in Frontier League play this Friday with a home game against Paola (0-3).
