Tonganoxie High boys cross country wins home invite, girls take 2nd

The Tonganoxie High boys cross country team wins the Tonganoxie Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024, at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.

The Tonganoxie High boys cross country team won its home invitational Saturday, while the THS girls almost made it a clean sweep.

Tonganoxie’s boys squad finished with 28 points, with Basehor-Linwood taking second with 40 and St. Mary’s Academy third with 57.

On the girls side, BLHS won the meet with 26, while Tonganoxie was close behind in second with 30.

Tonganoxie did sweep the individual titles.

Sophomore Parker Welsh won the boys race on the home course at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds with a time of 17 minutes, 13.98 seconds. Senior Kara Johnson won the girls individual title with a time of 21 minutes, 11 seconds.

THS provided a 1-2 punch on the boys side with senior Solomon Carter taking second behind Welsh with a time of 17:20.16. St. Mary’s Academy senior Xavier Gresham prevented THS from taking the top three spots. He finished with a time of 17:28.93. THS senior Jett Gilmore placed fourth (17:41.45).

Senior Piercen Eccles also finished in the Top 10 for the Chieftains.

He placed ninth (18:26.67).

Freshman Elijah Weatherford nabbed 12th (19:01.84) and senior Huston Albert 13th (19:16.22).

Ried Wilson also competed for THS in the varsity race. He finished with a time of 21:13.97, good for 20th.

Freshman Brooke Nihart placed fifth in the girls varsity race. She crossed the finish line at 24:12.99.

Tonganoxie juniors placed seventh through 10th at the home invitational. Autumn Wilson placed seventh (24:54.63), Gracelyn Barnett eighth (25:11.28), Taylor Liebeno ninth (25:49.04) and Kate Wilson 10th (25:51.39).

Senior Elena Edholm placed 12th (26:42.76) in the race.

Tonganoxie runners now will direct their attention to the Rim Rock Invitational this coming Saturday at Rim Rock Farm between Lawrence and McLouth.

The course is home to the Kansas cross country team, as KU has its home meets there.
