Tonganoxie girls wrestling takes 3rd at Washburn Rural meet, finishes ahead of other 4A teams

It’s another strong showing for the Tonganoxie High girls wrestling team. The Chieftains placed third Saturday at the Washburn Rural Invitational. THS took third, just a half-point behind second-place Manhattan and 72 points ahead of Chapman, which was ranked No. 1 in 4A heading into the tournament.

The Chieftains competed Saturday at Washburn Rural and came away with a third-place finish.

Washburn Rural won the tournament with 210.5 points. Manhattan placed second with 149, barely beating out Tonganoxie, which scored 148.5.

THS, which is ranked No. 2 in Class 4A, finished ahead of No. 9 Abilene which scored 102.5 for fourth place at WRHS, and No. 1 Chapman, which scored 76.5 for 10th.

Tonganoxie also had to battle some illness, but still sent eight wrestlers to the podium.

Kaylee Pankey (25-10) placed fourth at 110, Stella Bradley (29-5) second at 115, Autumn Wilson (24-6) second at 120, Mackenzie Colgrove (18-15) fourth at 145 and Kendall Smart (10-16) sixth at 155.

Grace Stean (20-6) nabbed Tonganoxie’s third second-place finish at 170 and Katy Duncan (19-13) took fourth at 190. Caylee Martin (3-17) finished sixth at 235.

Stella Bradley is the No. 1 wrestler in 4A at 115 in the latest Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association poll. The newest poll was set to come out Tuesday, but it was released after The Mirror’s print publication.

Autumn Wilson is No. 4 at 120 and Grace Stean No. 2 at 170.

Tonganoxie will compete at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Frontier League Meet in Ottawa. Both the boys and girls league meets will take place simultaneously at OHS.

After that its regional wrestling Feb. 14 and 15 at Paola. Other teams assigned to the regional are Labette County, Atchison, Baldwin, Burlington, Chanute, Coffeyville, Columbus, Eudora, Fort Scott, Frontenac, Galena, Anderson County, Girard, Hiawatha, Holton, Independence, Iola, Bishop Ward, Prairie View, Louisburg, Jeff West, Osawatomie, Ottawa, Poala, Parsons, Perry-Lecompton, Santa Fe Trail, Nemaha Central, Bishop Miege, Silver Lake, Tonganoxie, Hayden and Wellsville.

The other regional site is McPherson.

Tonganoxie wins dual

THS and Gardner-Edgerton met for a dual last week after both teams’ initial dual opponents had to back out. Tonganoxie won a hard-fought dual, 42-36, at GEHS.
