Library News: Holocaust program; firefighter storytime; Holiday Bingo planned
Upcoming Holocaust program is Dec. 1
The library will welcome author Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg for a program next month.
Mirriam-Goldberg will begin her program at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Her presentation celebrates the lives of two courageous men, Lou Frydman, a Holocaust survivor, and Jarek Piekalkiewicz, a Polish resistance fighter, who defied all the odds and survived. Both men lost all that was dear to them but bravely began new lives here in Kansas.
Despite their tragedies, they found the courage to start again. Mirriam-Goldberg will share their stories in this program made possible by Humanities Kansas.
“Holocaust Stories of Resistance and Resilience” is part of Humanities Kansas’ Speakers Bureau and “21st Century Civics,” a collection of resources that invite Kansans to participate in community discussions and learn more about the history of American democracy and the shared responsibilities of citizenship. “21st Century Civics” is made possible with support from “A More Perfect Union: America at 250,” an initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Special firefighter storytime is next month
Our children’s librarian, Ms. Susan, will be welcoming some of our local firefighter friends to a very special storytime starting at 11 a.m. Dec. 9.
Youths will get to visit with our firefighters, and there will also be a read-aloud with them. And no storytime would be complete without some songs with Ms. Susan — and a craft, too!
Holiday bingo event planned
We’re spreading a little holiday cheer at the library with a rousing game of holiday bingo! Participants will be treated to seasonally themed games and prizes.
The special bingo will be noon-2 p.m. Dec. 10 at the library.
Game play is open to adults and anyone 12 years of age and older.
It’s free to attend, but those interested will need to pre-register by calling the library at 913-845-3281.
