Active space: Tonganoxie Rec Commission continues to grow offerings at new facility in USD 464 Administrative Center
The Tonganoxie Recreation Commission Activity Center continues to establish itself as a hub for various exercise opportunities and more in the former Tonganoxie High School west campus.
Anyone wanting to use the activity center can visit the space at 300 U.S. Highway 24-40 and utilize it for walking, pickleball, basketball, ping pong and more.
The facility is part of the building that now is home to the USD 464 Administrative Center just west of Tonganoxie High School. The TRC facility entrance is clearly marked near the southeast corner of the building.
Current hours of operation are 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
Open gym times vary, but current times generally are noon-5:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, Noon-7 p.m. Wednesday, noon-8 p.m. Thursday, noon-6:30 p.m. Friday, noon-3 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. There’s also adult open gym 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday. Fifth- and sixth-grade basketball is 6-8 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday.
Pickleball times are 6-8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m.-noon Wednesday.

TRC officials recently added a ping pong table, elliptical, recumbent bike and two treadmills in the commons/social area.
The gymnasium accommodates six basketball goals, two volleyball courts and three pickleball courts depending on which is being used.
Residents can use the facilities through the end of the month for free. Non-residents pay $2.
Starting March 1, daily fees will be $1 for students and seniors (60 and older) and $2 for adults. Daily fees for non-residents will be $3 for students and seniors and $4 for adults.
Youths 5 and younger can use the activity center for free.
Annual resident fees are $40 for students and seniors and $60 for adults. Family passes are $60 for senior families and $100 for regular family passes.. Non-resident annual passes are $100 for students and seniors, $200 for adults and $150 for senior family passes. Regular family passes are $300 for non-residents.
Punch cards, which will be rolled out soon, will be 20-visit cards for $30 (residents) and $50 (non-residents).
TRC director Brad Eccles said Tuesday that the activity center is averaging 12 walkers in the morning and 8-12 pickleball players on Tuesdays. There also are about 10-15 adult basketball players on Wednesday nights. Eccles said there’s a possibility TRC will add a dedicated volleyball time slot at the center. He’s also interviewing program directors next week so that more classes and special events can be added to program offerings.
Current staff along with Eccles is assistant TRC director Zach Nachbar, building supervisors Linn Cooper, Cherry Mastro and David Ayers. High school students also serve as part-time gym supervisors in the evenings and on weekends.
