Leavenworth man who threatened officer with sword sentenced
A 56-year-old Leavenworth man who used a sword to threaten a police officer has been sentenced to prison for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
A judge sentenced Lonnie Bailey Jr. to serve 43 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections. Bailey will receive credit for 152 days already served. Sentencing was Wednesday, May 3, in Leavenworth County District Court.
Bailey was arrested on Dec. 3, 2022, when officers were on patrol near West Seventh and Chestnut streets in downtown Leavenworth, according to release from Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson.
According to officers, Bailey had a large sword in his hands, and after being ordered to drop the sword, Bailey became agitated and began yelling at officers.
Court documents stated that at least one police officer approached Bailey with his service weapon in hand at the low and ready position.
As officers approached, Bailey unsheathed his sword while yelling and took a fighting stance. After Bailey unsheathed his sword, he raised it above his head and approached officers, the release said.
Eventually, Bailey placed his sword back in its sheath and stated, “Shoot me punk” seven times while officers continued with verbal commands.
Bailey eventually threw the sword and was taken into custody.
“This is a case where officers need to be prepared for any situation,” Thompson said. “There are obvious issues going on, but our paramount concern is the community and our officers.”
