The second feat was a bit more nerve-wracking, but when the final horn sounded, a jubilant THS team celebrated another big victory in the playoffs.

THS defeated Ottawa in the regular season finale and then in the first Friday of the playoffs.

This past week, the Chieftains had to follow up with a Chanute team whose only loss came early in the season at Tonganoxie.

THS trailed once, was tied twice and never led by more than 15.

But that’s what playoff football can look like.

Tonganoxie held on for the 28-21 victory. The Chieftains improved to 8-2 and provided Chanute’s only record blemishes this season.

The game got heated at times, with two Chanute players getting ejected in the third quarter after unsportsmanlike conduct fouls.

In the end, THS was able to keep its composure and hold on for the victory.

Tonganoxie now must face undefeated Atchison (10-0) this coming Friday at AHS.

The Phoenix, the No. 1 seed in the Class 4A East Bracket, downed No. 8 Eudora, 50-27, Friday. Tonganoxie defeated Eudora, 21-7, on Oct. 13.

A victory in sectionals this Friday would put THS in the substate round for the first time in school history.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday in Atchison.
