Neelly wins primary by 45 votes; O’Brien advances in State Board of Education race
A local incumbent won a tough primary, while a former state representative advanced by a larger margin in a State Board of Education race.
Lance Neelly, Republican incumbent in the Kansas House’s 42nd District, defeated challenger and Leavenworth County Commissioner Mike Stieben by 45 votes. Neelly had 1,222 votes compared to Stieben’s 1,177.
Former state representative Connie O’Brien won the State Board of Education Fourth District primary with 44% of the vote. She had 8,618 votes, while Nancy Moneymaker had 7,216 (37%) and Gina Montalbano Zesiger 3,826 (19%).
She will face Democrat Kris Meyer in the general election. Meyer was the only Democratic candidate in the primary.
