Leavenworth County plans for 2- mill increase; USD 464 holds line

The Leavenworth County Commission will have a public hearing this morning on its proposed 2025 budget that would carry a 2-mill maximum mill levy increase from 2024 if approved.

The hearing will be at 9 a.m. today at commission chambers on the second floor of the Leavenworth County Courthouse, 300 Walnut St. in Leavenworth.

The proposed 2025 maximum mill rate is 37.779, up from 35.779 this year.

The county had the largest jump in mill rates among governing bodies in Leavenworth County.

Tonganoxie USD 464 school board members approved their proposed 2024-25 budget during a special meeting Wednesday, Aug. 21, while the Tonganoxie City Council approved its proposed budget on Aug. 19 during a regular meeting.

Public hearings will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers, Third and Bury streets, for the city council budget and 6:10 p.m. Sept. 9 at the regular board meeting in the board chambers at the USD 464 Administrative Center, 300 E. U.S. Highway 24-40.

The school district has a mill rate of 59.772, which is a slight decrease from the 2023-24 actual tax rate of 59.857 mills.

Tonganoxie City, meanwhile, has a maximum mill levy of 40.757, which is just higher than the actual mill rate of 40.695 for 2024. The increase is for a line item for the library’s budget, which is submitted through the city’s budget.

Tonganoxie Recreation Commission has a slight drop in mill rate at 4.8 for 2025. It’s actual rate for this year is 4.802.
