Candidate forum Saturday in Tonganoxie to feature primary races

The Tonganoxie VFW Primary Forum will be Saturday at the Tongan- oxie VFW Post Home, 901 E. First St. in Tonganoxie.

All county and state office seekers are being invited. The forum will begin at 9 a.m. July 13, with county offices first, followed by state office seekers (which should start around 9:45 a.m.)

The forum is set to conclude at 10:30 a.m. Any candidates that potentially could represent the citizens of Tonganoxie and the area are encouraged to attend. Each candidate will be given 2 minutes to introduce themselves and tell why they are running. This will be followed by audience questions. If candidates do not have a primary opponent they are still welcome to attend.

Republican primaries at the county level will be held for treasurer, register of deeds and sheriff.

Caleb Gordon faces former Register of Deeds Staci Driscoll in the treasurer primary, while incumbent TerriLois Mashburn faces Jeff Conklin in the register of deeds primary. Current Sheriff Andy Dedeke faces challenger Kent Leintz in the county sheriff race.

There won’t be any general elections for county seats on Tonganoxie residents’ ballots unless a write-in campaign takes place. All candidates for county offices on those ballots are Republicans, including unopposed County Attorney Todd Thompson and Fran Keppler, who is running for County Clerk.

Tonganoxie is in the Leavenworth County Commission’s Fifth District, but Districts 2 and 3 will have primaries and general elections.

Incumbent Vicky Kaaz faces Vanessa Reid in the District 2 Republican primary. The winner will face United Kansas candidate Joe Wilson in the general election.

In the District 3 race, Republicans Vernon Fields, Willie Dove and David Breuer are running in the primary. The winner will face United Kansas candidate Sherri Grogan in the general election.

Kansas House 42 incumbent Lance Neely faces challenger and current County Commissioner Mike Stieben in the Republican primary, while Republicans Nancy Moneymaker, Gina Montalbano Zesinger and Connie O’Brien are running for State Board of Education, Position 4.

In the Kansas Senate 9 race, Bryan Zesiger and Beverly Gossage will meet in the Repubilcan primary. The winner will face Democrat Norman Mallicoat in the general election.
