Tonganoxie High unified bowling team wins regional, earns state bid
Tonganoxie High School has another state team — and it’s in a new sport.
The THS unified bowling team won a Class 6-1A regional last week at Park Lanes in Shawnee.
Tonganoxie won first place at the six-game tournament with a high score of 816. Basehor-Linwood bowled a 786, Piper a 760 and Shawnee Mission Northwest a 748. Shawnee Mission East finished out the state qualifiers with 717. The Top 5 teams from each regional advanced to state during regionals Wednesday, Nov. 13.
Team members on this year’s THS team are Jacob Smith, Amaya Mendoza, Antonio Romero and Tayber Witt. Morgan Schmidt coaches the THS squad.
Others competing were Mill Valley (696), Turner (671), Bonner Springs (649), Shawnee Mission North (627), JC Harmon (594), Atchison (681), Lansing (569) and FL Schlagle (523).
Most of the regionals took place in this part of the state, as two other regional tournaments last week were at Olathe Lanes East and West Ridge Lanes in Topeka. The fourth regional was at Cheney Lanes in Cheney.
THS team members were recognized for their accomplishment during halftime of Friday’s sectional football game against Lansing as well.
THS competed Tuesday at the 6-1A state championships at West Ridge Lanes in Topeka. Tonganoxie bowled in Lane 17 at West Ridge Lanes on Tuesday at the 20-team tournament. Also bowling in Tonganoxie’s group of lanes were Garden City (15), Olathe Norhtwest (16) and Emporia (18). Three lanes separated the four-team groups.
The tournament took place after The Mirror’s print deadline, but more about the team can be found online at tonganoxiemirror.com or in the Nov. 27 print edition of The Mirror.
This is the fourth year for unified bowling as a Kansas State High School Activities Association sport.
Garden City won state in 2023, Shawnee Mission East in 2022 and Goddard in 2021.
