To the editor:

Citizens Against Bluestem (CAB) would like to clarify an important point regarding recent comments made during the ongoing discussion about the proposed hyperscale data center and power plant near the Tonganoxie city limits.

Mr. Ron Grossman is not a member of Citizens Against Bluestem. While Mr. Grossman shares our opposition to the proposed project, his statements and actions do not represent CAB or its members.

CAB members have consistently been encouraged to treat our elected officials, county staff, developers, and anyone who may have a different point of view with respect and dignity. We believe strongly that citizens can be passionate and persistent in expressing their concerns without resorting to personal attacks or inappropriate comments.

CAB members were disappointed that not all County Commissioners attended the September 16 gathering at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds in Tonganoxie. We believe elected officials have an important responsibility to listen to the citizens they represent, particularly when a project of this size could have significant and lasting consequences for our community.

At the September 23 County Commission meeting, Mr. Grossman made an inappropriate statement directed toward Commissioner Willie Dove. Following the comment, Commissioner Dove expressed his concern that this type of attitude was not helping him or anyone in the group he was with. We agree.

Disagreement is part of the democratic process. Strong disagreement is appropriate when citizens believe their community is facing serious issues. But disrespect does not strengthen our position, it distracts from the legitimate questions and concerns being raised by residents.

CAB will continue to advocate vigorously for transparency, responsible planning, appropriate safeguards, and meaningful consideration of the potential impacts of the proposed data center and power plant. We will continue to ask difficult questions and hold our elected officials accountable for the decisions they make.

But we will also continue to encourage our members and supporters to conduct themselves with civility and respect.

Our community deserves a serious discussion about Project Bluestem. That discussion can and should be passionate, factual, and respectful.
